Work History

GIS Project Manager

Symbiont Science and Engineering
Milwaukee, WI
05.2015 - Current
  • Designed and constructed a new GIS website for City of Hartford using the ArcGIS JavaScript API, ArcGIS Server and the Dojo JavaScript Framework
  • The website offers users (citizens and city employees) a variety of GIS-based analytical query tools and functions
  • This website replaced an older website that was built in Adobe Flex
  • The transition away from Flex opened up site access to a more diverse set of web browsing devices
  • Built a website/dashboard for the City of Hartford that will be used by the fire and police departments, allowing users to search land parcels by street address, and pull up structure plans associated with that location
  • The user is able to see the building’s interior layout, aerial view, and street view very quickly (seconds)
  • Also included in the website are hydrant locations and flow rates which are displayed on the map as well
  • Developed a new plug-in map zoom in and out widget in JavaScript for a co-worker’s GIS project
  • This widget can be used on a variety of GIS web projects
  • Developed a twitter Web-Scraper with Python to harvest Tweets from a specific geographic location by a specific hashtag

GIS Manager/Web Developer

ELM Consulting LLC
Milwaukee, WI
01.2007 - 05.2015
  • Through a collaborative effort with the Hartford Planning Department, I built a customized version of Microsoft Access, which stores, retrieves, and reports on building permits and violations
  • The data entry and reporting features were built directly to client specifications, on time and within budget
  • The system I designed replaced older permitting software, which had become obsolete and incompatible with current computer operating systems
  • The original data files were manually converted from their file format, and imported into Access
  • Managed a team of consultants who successfully completed a large project mapping features of interest on historic aerial photos for an EPA Superfund location
  • Over 100 ArcGIS maps were delivered to the client
  • These map products were used by the client to make high-level legal decisions
  • Sampled groundwater from wells at remediation sites
  • Groundwater was then delivered to local laboratories for analysis
  • Sampled groundwater in 6 different states
  • Designed and implemented project-specific geodatabases to store the environmental data collected at contaminated sites, as well as the CAD basemap and GPS/survey data to which the analytical data is tied
  • Used Trimble GPS units for a pilot study considering the possibility of replacing traditional utility locating equipment with highly accurate GIS units
  • Recorded utility locations and used a real-time online differential correction service to achieve sub-one foot position accuracy
  • Trained graduate students to use Trimble equipment after completion of the study

GIS Specialist

URS Corporation
Milwaukee, WI
01.2004 - 01.2007
  • Managed the development and implementation of two custom ESRI-based GIS tools for a private sector client in Wisconsin
  • Converted a large number of AutoCAD files into an ArcGIS geodatabase to be used in conjunction with existing GIS files
  • Sampled groundwater from wells at our remediation sites
  • Groundwater was then delivered to local laboratories for analysis
  • Sampled groundwater in 2 different states
  • Used Trimble GPS units for surveying bridge and culvert locations in Ozaukee County WI
  • The GPS points were incorporated into GIS and used in a county-wide flood insurance study
  • Modeled river sediment thickness using GIS for a major sediment PCB study in WI
  • After the sediment thicknesses were determined, they were used to calculate volume of PCB present and most appropriate location for sediment removal
  • Modeled in 3D, plumes of BETX analytes below a decommissioned oil refinery in IL
  • The 3D models were incorporated into videos that were presented to the client as a way to better visualize the sub-surface contamination of their site
  • The plumes were also compared to subsurface utilities to look for potential contaminant pathways off site

GIS Technician

Tier 3 Inc.
Milwaukee, WI
01.2004 - 12.2004
  • Using Smallworld GIS software, I edited and corrected errors on digital utility maps
  • The map errors were a byproduct of the conversion from MicroStation file format to Smallworld file format

GIS Intern

Bureau of Land Management - Eastern States
Milwaukee, WI
01.2004 - 12.2004
  • Created ESRI ArcMap-generated GIS maps on request, showing land and mineral interests for the Milwaukee office of the BLM
  • Organized 25 gigabytes of GIS data for advisor into a file folder system based on project location

Graduate School GIS Project Assistant

UW-Milwaukee Geography Department
Milwaukee, WI
01.2003 - 12.2003

  • Georeferenced several hundred aerial images of Guatemala City, Guatemala for Professor Nik Heynen for use in his research

GIS Lab Technician

UW-Milwaukee Ecology Department
Milwaukee, WI
01.1999 - 12.2003
  • Maintained an ESRI geodatabase of aquatic field data collected by Dr
  • Tim Ehlinger’s fish ecology lab
  • The geodatabase contained sample locations, watershed boundaries, river lines, watershed, and land use raster files
  • Used GIS to connect land use practices with fish species present at each collection site within the targeted river system
