  • While sailing in the fleet as Chief Engineer, I was placed on a special assignment by company management to implement the company's second-generation electronic maintenance system.
  • This was a Y2K-compliant MS Windows system called RAST, a Norwegian acronym standing for Maintenance, Scheduling, and Spare Parts Management.
  • Developed and converted all existing job plans, spare parts, and equipment hierarchies for a fleet of 30 vessels.
  • Created technical documents such as user manuals, process flows and system diagrams.
  • Equipment hierarchies were based on the Norwegian SFI system.
  • Developed all business processes for the new software platform.
  • The project was successful, going live before the January 1st 2000 deadline.
  • After project completion, I was brought into Chevron Shipping's headquarters in San Ramon to manage the system.

  • Responsible for the development, issuance, monitoring, and ongoing management of the CSC technical budget, which includes both capital and operational budgets.
  • Ensured the necessary resources for supporting a high-performance, multi-disciplined team, capable of meeting all CSC objectives, were in place and driven by a robust resource allocation (staffing) plan.
  • Developed high-quality maintenance procedures for vessel equipment to support the predictive maintenance system. Redefined maintenance for many vessel systems to promote more efficient triggering of maintenance using predictive inputs.

  • Routinely liaised with other Chevron Corporation business units, such as Oronite, Lubricants, Products, Power, Upstream Operations, and Pipeline, to ensure clear customer alignment.

These metrics had a strong positive influence on improving overall asset integrity and reliability. Significantly improved all aspects of vessel reliability over tenure, including equipment downtime, vessel availability, forced investment for machinery failures, and overall maintenance and repair costs.
  • Strong understanding of all marine vessel equipment and systems, including MAN slow-speed diesel engines, Wartsila medium-speed tri-fuel engines, scrubbers, purifiers, HVAC, boilers, steam turbines, control systems, switchgear, pumps, motors, generators, ballast water treatment systems, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems, to mention a few.

  • While serving as First Assistant Engineer, I was assigned to a special project to implement the company’s first electronic Computerized Machinery Maintenance System (CMMS) for five U.S. Flag Gas Turbine tankers and the company's fleet warehouse in Richmond, CA.
  • The system was called SPIM, which stood for Spare Parts Inventory Management, owned by a maritime software company called Marine Maintenance Systems (MMS), headquartered in Stamford, CT.
  • I developed the equipment hierarchy, the spare parts database, and converted the paper Planned Maintenance System into an electronic format.
  • As a one-man team, I identified, inventoried, bagged, and labeled thousands of spare machinery parts on each vessel.
  • The project was successfully completed on time and under budget.
  • The SPIM system was used until it was replaced 10 years later by RAST, a Y2K-compliant MS Windows product.
