I worked for twelve years as an LCPS special education teacher at Harper Park Middle School in Leesburg. Through the IEP process, I learned how to collaborate with families helping them determine a pathway and the necessary individual supports for their child to succeed. I maintained personal contact with these parents throughout the school year.
I specialized in teaching pre-algebra in the self contained setting. To advance my abilities, I joined "Learning and the Brain," an organization of teachers and neuroscientists, sponsored by Harvard University and John's Hopkins University, whose purpose was to determine best practices for teaching. I attended two of their several day conferences and received professional development credits for my participation.
I was very fortunate to teach under the supervision of Ms. Beth Robinson, who is currently the Executive Principal, LCPS Office of Middle School Education. Ms. Robinson oversaw my work in the capacity of Vice Principal for Special Education at Harper Park and then as Principal
During this time, I served on former Superintendent Ziegler's Middle School Advisory Committee and the LCPS Math Textbook Committee, which chose our last math texts, to make sure there was input from Special Education teachers (and students). I also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Loudoun Education Association.
Through these experiences, I have learned how to listen and collaborate, and feel I would be an effective member of CTEAC. My passion is that LCPS expand our CTE programs so that more students with disabilities and other underserved students have pathways to succeed.
