Member Forensic Mapping Team

Maine Warden Service
01.2008 - 01.2013

The FM team is trained to use a total station theodolite and prism to capture evidence points in the field with a high degree of accuracy and precision. We then import the data to special mapping software so that we can produce a scaled diagram of the scene. This endeavor requires a high degree of attention to detail and precision so that the diagrams we create hold evidentiary weight in court. Many of the scenes we map involve fatalities with likely prosecution, hunting related incidents, and hunting crimes near residences. Often times our work is a critical piece of a prosecution, and is often gone over with a fine-toothed comb by defense attorneys. For instance, in a vehicular manslaughter case the measurements derived from the mapper’s diagram will be used as the basis for a crash reconstructionist and if a defense team wants to discredit the reconstructionist’s conclusion they may attack the underlying measurements from the diagram.
