Residential Counselor
Western Kentucky University - Bowling Green
09.2009 - 06.2012
Manages residential facilities, creating a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment.
Serves as role model in all areas of personal, relational and academic life.
Develops and implements educational, cultural, social and recreational activities
The residential counselor is a live-in position. I managed a floor of 20 female seniors and juniors high school students. The students are gifted individuals who were dual enrolled in their home high school and Gatton Academy. The students were taking university classes at Western Kentucky University. I provided curfew checks nightly to ensure that the students were accounted for. I planned weekend activities for the whole student body (126 residents) every third weekend with another co-worker. This included overnight trips like white water rafting and skiing, to day trips like visiting science museums, professional bull riding rodeo, haunted (Halloween) lair and ice skating. In addition to planning weekend activities, I planned two social wing programs and one educational program monthly. The educational program was sometimes a team effort; we found that students liked to invite others to activities.
Clinical Liaison
Youth Villages
04.2008 - 05.2008
Provided family, individual and group counseling
Conducted CFTM’s - child family and treatment meetings
Completed Intake Interviews, Admissions and Discharge Summaries
Staff at the Deer Valley location of Youth Villages asked if I was willing to continue working there as a clinical liaison because they were short staffed, I was able to do so and the transition was a welcomed new challenge. I essentially had a week with one of the other Counselors who trained me and then started with the group the following week. I did intakes for new residents, weekly counseling sessions with the 11 residents, set up home visits, conducted weekly group therapy. I kept communication flowing with parents, judges, DCS workers about the progress of the youth. With the help of the other staff members, we developed a treatment plan and we developed weekly goals with the youth. When families, DCS and staff agreed, we started home visits and after successful home visits the discharge process started.

Overnight Teacher Counselors (OTC’s) work 4 days on, 3 days off. I worked a Wednesday morning to Sunday Morning shift. Another staff and I were responsible for 9 male teenagers that were at an outdoor juvenile treatment center for individuals that had drug, alcohol and behavioral problems with the legal system and/or DCS – department of child services. Daily Routine was an important part of the job. We had the residents clean their living quarters in the morning, then we went to the dining hall for breakfast. After breakfast, they went to the on campus school. Once school was finished, we started our shift again. We led recreational activities for an hour and a half, proceeded to the shower house, had dinner and then went to the cabin for the night. Once at the cabin, students were able to play board games, write, play card games and make their weekly supervised phone call. Responsibilities of an OTC include: helping the resident achieve their daily treatment goals, helping them participate in and understand clinical group, participating in recreational activities, taking them on good behavior outings, teaching them life skills or independent living skills, and maintaining their overall well-being and safety.
