Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District
08.1993 - 06.2024
  • Inquiry based NGSS curriculum. Implemented use of phone sensors for data collection and analysis as a model for school, district, and others. STEP UP Ambassador American Physical Society (APS) trained physics teachers throughout the country in curriculum to promote diversity and inclusion in physics courses. Physics Resource Teaching Resource Agent (PTRA) with American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). – Began AP Physics C - (Mechanics) and Multivariable Calculus (95% pass rate on AP Physics). Also taught AP Calculus BC, Honors Physics, Engineering Physics and Conceptual Physics. Coordinator of the Green Engineering Academy - Award Winning California Partnership Academy focused on overcoming equity issues in STEM fields. AP Calculus BC ten year pass rate 90% and increased number of test takers from 20 to 90. Science Dept. Co-Chair (since 2011) during implementation of NGSS. Developed more than a dozen new courses in past ten years in science, mathematics, and engineering including Engineering Research and Development (ERD) (2014), Algebra with Robotics (2013), Engineering Physics (2012), AP Physics C (2014), Multivariable Calculus (2016) and Introduction to Data Science (2022).

Summer Visiting Educator

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, LLNL
06.2021 - 08.2021
  • Worked with a team lead by Dr. David Rakestraw to develop, troubleshoot, and implement physics curriculum using the Phyphox app for students in grades 9-14 to utilize the phone sensors for data collection and analysis. Curriculum can be downloaded free without charge at this site: https://st.llnl.gov/sci-ed/Physics-with-Phones

STEP-UP Ambassador

American Physical Society (APS)
07.2019 - 07.2021
  • As a STEP UP Ambassador worked collaboratively with a group of STEP UP teachers and members committed to the goal of inspiring young women to pursue physics. Trained and supported implementation of the STEP UP curriculum in classrooms around the country.

Skills

  • Experienced Physics Instructor who excels in motivating and educating all students in the study of physics

Programs of Significance

  • 2010- present Green Engineering Academy for At-Risk Youth - A California Partnership Academy (CPA) to motivate our most fragile community to study STEM fields. Received national recognition through a "White House Award for Excellence in Educating Hispanic Youth (2015) as well as a Golden Bell Award (2012), CA Golden Ribbon Award (2015) and the California Distinguished School Award (2018).
  • 2000 - present LVJUSD Science Odyssey - In collaboration with district wide staff, developed a district wide Science Celebration promotes project-based-learning (PBLs), Began in 2000 continued with hundreds of projects, events, community participation, food, music, etc. continues as a district wide event to this day.
  • 2010 - 2019 Calculus Camp - Weekend Camp To Review for the AP Calculus and Physics exams in a fun, collaborative environment. Camp grew from 25 (2010) at one high school to more than 150 students (2019) from two rival high schools. In year end course evaluations 100% students rated the camp experience as highly beneficially to their understanding of Calculus and 23% rated Calculus Camp as their best academic experience in their high school years.
  • 2014 - present "Seniors Helping Seniors" High School senior engineering academy students design and build devices to make life easier for senior citizens with memory loss.
  • 2016 - present Adopt a Physicist - Four week program with students and physicists from around the United States culminating with a teleconference with several prominent physicists.
  • 2009 - present "Physics in a Box" - Students create laboratory activities of which the lab supplies fit in a shoe box and sent to a physics class in under served communities in the US and abroad.
