Painting

Painting:

  • Starting in grammar school, I studied with a local artist in New York with my sister. I started with watercolors of our house and the rocks in Maine.
  • As I entered high school, I was picked to study with a special group learning/practicing oil painting. The group was set up like a 19th art class: we visited museums in New York where we were allowed to sketch the Masters
  • Later in High School, I became familiar with the vast number of women artists who became famous but had been ignored. I participated in a small show of acrylic painting after the work of the Ninth Street Group
  • After college, I worked at the American Arts Gallery in Soho. There I learned so much from the owner of the gallery who was a well-known artist in his own right. There I worked on acrylics and cyanotype (an art form that is accessible to 'artists' from little children to professionals)

Additional Information

Recently I've been able to work with inner city children in Denver. Focusing on primary school children, I've been able to work with Spanish-speaking young visitors. Recently we went to the DAM's collection of works by Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo. As a black artist of note, Boafo's collection at the Denver Art Museum captured our interest right away, his paintings were done solely by finger painting. Our little group of 'artists' were anxious to get back to art class where they made beautiful art with fingers and water color paints.
