Work History

RN, IBCLC

Private Practice IBCLC RN
01.1996 - Current
  • I have over 40 years experience as a Registered Nurse working in the state of Maryland all of my career. Please see WORK HISTORY below for more information about each position I have held in various Maryland Hospitals.
  • While working at John's Hopkins as a Labor & Delivery nurse, staff and community Educator and as an IBCLC/Lactation Consultant I have also maintained my own private practice - BIRTH & BREASTFEED with CONFIDENCE and have conducted in-home consultations for women/families struggling with breastfeeding issues. I am an in-network provider for aetna and Blue Cross/Blue Shield CareFirst.
  • An IBCLC is seen as an expert who is recognized globally as the gold standard in breastfeeding and lactation care for their advanced knowledge and clinical skills. I have been certified since 1996 after completing the additional educational requirements and passing the Board exam which falls under the IBLCE. IBCLC or the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants sets the requirements to be "Board Certified". One has to maintain their credentials by retaking the exam and taking continuing education credits or CERPs and being RE-certified every 5 years to stay updated in their profession. IBCLCs work in many health care settings that include private practice, public health clinics, pediatric offices and hospitals. Working together with families, policymakers and society, IBCLCs provide expert breastfeeding and lactation care, promote and educate other medical professional as well as families. An IBCLC collaborates with an interdisciplinary team to resolve infant feeding issues.
  • Throughout my 40 years as a nurse and my 29 years as an IBCLC, I have worked with a diverse population and in many various settings.
  • I have also hosted free Breastfeeding Support Groups for my community and worked with many post-partum mothers returning to employment. I assist families to develop plans to use electric breast pumps so they can continue feeding human milk while being separated from their infant/baby/toddler. I have worked with single mothers, gay couples, divorced couples or blended families in many different situations.
  • IBCLCs can also serve as expert witnesses in legal proceedings related to situations involving lactation, such as divorce, custody and visitation cases and also cases involved in protecting lactation in the workplace.
  • I have served on the Board for The Maryland Breastfeeding Coalition for several years - which is a group of diverse health professionals, parents, educators and policy-makers, organizations and businesses the promote, protect and support breastfeeding. This organization falls under the USBC or United States Breastfeeding Committee - for which I am also a member.
  • I just retired from John's Hopkins Howard County General Hospital this past June 2024 and I continue to be the CEO of my small private practice doing in-home lactation consultations in Maryland.
