I recently retired from a 36 year career in grocery retail with Safeway. In that time I held many different positions, gaining knowledge in several aspects of the business. I started as a Courtesy Clerk (bagger), then worked up to checker within a year. After graduating high school I was given the opportunity to become full time and join the night stocking crew. Over the next several years I learned how to write the order for the entire store and manage a crew of 5 to 10 people. I moved to another store to help out their night stocking crew that was struggling. Seeing my potential, shortly after that I was put in charge of the frozen food department. I was responsible for writing the order, stocking the department, keeping the backstock organized and down to a minimum. I held this position for 10 years before deciding to move to Inventory Control Clerk (ICC). I held the ICC position for 12+ years. I was a District trainer for ICC's for 3 of those years. I finally decided I needed a change, so for the remainder of my time I moved to Front End/Customer Service. I retired on June 30, 2021 with a great sense of accomplishment. If I wasn't commuting over 100 miles a day, I would probably still be there.
