Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience

  • Hospital IPPE, 2025-06-01, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital, Fort Worth, Texas, Dr. Nauman Zia, During my hospital IPPE, I gained broad exposure to inpatient pharmacy practice across multiple departments, including the NICU, transplant unit, ED, OR, ICU, and general medicine floors. I completed medication reconciliations and PEN-FAST allergy assessments to enhance safety and optimize therapy decisions, and I compounded a Sildenafil suspension for a neonatal patient, reinforcing my sterile compounding skills. I also counseled heart failure patients prior to discharge, emphasizing adherence and strategies to reduce readmissions. In addition, I presented a journal club comparing Upadacitinib and Dupilumab for atopic dermatitis and completed a SOAP note on a real patient case, which strengthened my ability to analyze clinical data and apply evidence-based decision-making. This experience expanded my understanding of the pharmacist’s role in direct patient care while sharpening both my clinical and communication skills.
  • Community IPPE, 2024-06-01, Texas Health Rx Pharmacy, Burleson, Texas, Dr. Navjot Bains, During my IPPE rotation at Texas Health Rx, I gained extensive experience in various aspects of pharmacy practice. I performed numerous OTC consults, providing patients with accurate and helpful advice on OTC medications. I also handled drug information requests, researching and delivering detailed responses to both patients and healthcare providers. I documented and reported medication errors, learning the importance of accuracy and vigilance in preventing potential harm to patients. I conducted new prescription encounter counseling, ensuring patients understood their medication regimen, including dosage, side effects, and the importance of adherence. Additionally, I participated in medication management therapy, helping patients optimize their medication use for better health outcomes. Overall, this rotation at Texas Health Rx enhanced my clinical skills and reinforced the importance of patient education and safety in pharmacy practice.
  • Over-the-Counter (OTC) Consults IPPE, 2024-04-01, Walgreens Pharmacy, Fort Worth, Texas, #4437, Dr. David Thedford, During my rotation I actively engaged in completing OTC (over-the-counter) consultations as a student pharmacist. This experience involved providing personalized recommendations to patients seeking non-prescription medications for a variety of conditions, such as allergies, pain relief, and cold symptoms. I utilized my growing knowledge of pharmacology and patient care to assess individual needs, ensure the safe and effective use of OTC products, and educate patients on potential side effects and proper usage. This hands-on experience honed my communication skills and reinforced the importance of patient-centered care in a community pharmacy setting.
  • Fall Shadowing IPPE, 2023-11-01, Stellus Rx Pharmacy, Fort Worth, Texas, #1002, Dr. Ashley Blanch, During my fall shadowing experience, I had the opportunity to observe various aspects of pharmacy practice. I worked closely with my preceptor learning about the day-to-day operations of the pharmacy and the critical role pharmacists play in patient care. This experience enhanced my understanding of clinical practices, patient communications, and the importance of accuracy and attention to detail in the pharmacy profession.

Research

Primary Student Researcher, 2015-06-01 & 2016-06-01, Furman University Department of Chemistry, Greenville, South Carolina, Marion Martin, Ph.D., This project involved studying the formation, structure, and properties of SAMs, which are thin layers of molecules that spontaneously organize themselves on a substrate. I utilized various analytical techniques, such as spectroscopy and microscopy, to investigate the molecular arrangement and surface interactions of SAMs. The research aimed to understand how these monolayers can be tailored for specific applications, such as biosensors and nanotechnology. This experience enhanced my laboratory skills, critical thinking, and understanding of surface chemistry and molecular self-assembly.
