I am a father first and foremost.
I am a family-oriented person, and to me, family extends beyond the people I am related to. It encompasses friends, teammates, coworkers, and the people I encounter throughout my life. I have always found myself looking out for those around me, recognizing the good in people and encouraging them to become the best versions of themselves. I believe that is one of the reasons coaching has played such an important role in my life.
I began coaching wrestling while I was still in high school and continued for several years after graduation. I later became involved in rugby, where I quickly found myself taking on both administrative and coaching responsibilities within the Boise rugby community. After moving to Bend, Oregon, I continued to expand my involvement as an administrator, coach, and mentor. My involvement with the local men's rugby club eventually led me to help establish two high school programs and a college program.
For me, coaching has never been limited to what happens on the field. I have always viewed it as an opportunity to mentor people, build confidence, develop leadership, and help others recognize their own potential. I carry that same philosophy into my professional life. Whether I am working alongside fellow water operators, training new inspectors, coordinating with engineers, or working with field contractors, I try to approach each relationship with the same mindset: support people, share what I know, and help them succeed.
Looking back, it is interesting to realize how much of my adult life has been spent learning how to coach, mentor, lead, and support others. I believe those experiences have not only made me a better coach and leader, but have also helped me become a better father.
Being a father has always been one of the most important roles in my life. The lessons I have learned through coaching—patience, accountability, encouragement, discipline, and the importance of leading by example—have shaped the way I approach parenthood. Ultimately, I hope that the example I set for my children will stay with them long after they are grown. And, if I am fortunate enough to become a grandfather someday, I hope to carry those same lessons forward into that role as well.
