Work History

SUPERVISOR (GRADE 7)

SUNY Cobleskill College
08.2021 - 05.2025
  • Directed daily Operation with five team members under me and responsible for three separate buildings that I was directly supervising daily.
  • I also had a set daily routine I was responsible for cleaning daily too.
  • Organized monthly meetings with my crew to keep up on whatever was going on, on campus and what events were coming up on.
  • Summertime met with the team members more often to make sure that they were getting things done by appropriate time, depending on the different activities that were taken place in their areas.
  • Enforced sustainability with my team members, examples would be cutting down on wasting garbage bags, paper towels and soap in dispensers, etc.
  • Put in work-orders when needed to be addressed or repaired
  • Walked team members areas to make sure that they were taken care of their daily routines correctly.
  • Did yearly evaluations on each team member and if new every six-weeks for the first year.
  • Kept a calendar of when team took time off and what time that they used to make sure it matched with their timecards.
  • Did Bi-weekly timecards on my team
  • Handed out whatever paperwork was giving to me for the team. For instant would be the fire safety sheets. Each month every building was responsible for checking the exit signs and fire extinguishers.
  • Was responsible for collecting the teams request off slips and supply slips. When receiving them then I would put in my folder for my supervisor the grade 11 to collect.
  • My team was responsible for checking in with me if they needed to leave early or was calling in. I was their change of command. Chain of command is a very important thing we stress on the team.
  • I would occasionally pay for lunch for my team to show how much I appreciate their hard work. Showing appreciation was a big thing on my team and it went a long way with the team.
  • Take inventory of Janitor closet to see what and when things need to be ordered for our building. Each of my buildings ordered their own supplies that they need. I then look over them and approve them or not depending on the quantity of items they ordered. Certain items cant be over stocked in their closets.
  • Keep track of special events coming up and then inform the crew of them.

More about me

I have worked for the state for 16 plus years.  I started as a cleaner for a local grade school  and slowly worked my way up to a Supervisor at a SUNY College in Cobleskill and now I am seeking a Supervising Janitor position.  In March of 2024 I went and took the Supervising Janitor Civil Service Test and scored a 75.  I am a very hard worker that loves to work independently or in a team.  I will not ask my people to do anything that I wouldn't do myself.  My favorite saying is "there is no "I" in the work team".  I have learned that when you show appreciation to your co-workers it goes a long ways instead of always just the constructive criticism.  Both those things are very important to keep in mind when being a supervisor.  People tend to looking forward to working when they also get positive feedback on their work. Being I have started at the bottom like everyone else, I have learned from other supervisors and how we were treated and what not and learned from that.  I am sure that there is still going to be a lot of more things I will have to learn if I am the chosen one for the Supervising Janitor Position.  I am ready to take on the responsibility, spread my wings and come out of my comfort zone to advance into the next level of Supervising.  I am looking for long-term employment where I can spend my last 15 years of working for the state and then retire.
