I am proud to say that I will be a first-generation college graduate this April. After a long journey, I am not only proud to have earned a college degree, but mainly because that degree is in a field I am passionate about—one where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. As nurses and healthcare workers, we often become so accustomed to caring for others that we forget how much of an impact we can truly have. Spending just five extra minutes to understand how a patient receives information could make the difference between them learning to manage a chronic condition or allowing it to take over their lives. Although it may seem small, these moments of going the extra mile are what separate a good nurse from an excellent one. This is the nurse I strive to be. Throughout my schooling, I have worked two jobs to make ends meet, often clocking over sixty hours a week. I am not complaining—though it has been difficult, it has shaped me into the nursing student I am today, providing me with invaluable experience and lessons from the nurses I work alongside. During my time in healthcare, I have had the privilege of working with a diverse population of clients, ranging from individuals with developmental delays and psychiatric disorders to elderly patients with Parkinson’s or dementia. Most recently, I’ve worked with a wide variety of diagnoses while on the PCU and MedSurg floors at Medical City. Regardless of the patient, my goal is always the same: to be the nurse they remember for going the extra mile.
