Work History
Registered Professional Forester With State of California
Paradise Ridge Forestry (self employed)
Paradise, CA
01.1996 - Current
As a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) since 1996 it is my duty to prepare the necessary documents to meet each private landowner's needs regarding the removal of trees from his/her property
This can include preparation of a timber harvest plan (THP), nonindustrial timber management plan (NTMP), fuels reduction plan, or any of the many exemptions allowed by the state of California
I have done 45 appraisals in the last 5 years for timber property of various clients
I have provided vegetation management reconnaissance, advice and consultation for private contracts with various utility companies throughout this region as well as prepared a forest community protection grant for a 1000 acre tree farm in Yuba County and 7 approved California Forest Improvement Grants (CFIP) in Yuba and Nevada Counties
I have been responsible for training, supervision and field work for PG&E, Liberty Energy, SMUD, and trained 30 ISA arborists and 8 RPF's for the Camp Fire Tree Removal project.
I also act as a liaison between clients and State & Federal Agency representatives and Licensed Timber Operators
My most recent RPF work has centered around the Challenge, Brownsville, Dobbins and Camptonville areas although I have been almost as busy working in the Nevada City - Grass Valley and various Placer County communities with THP's and forest fuels reduction projects
I have recently had a 665-acre Timber Harvest Plan (THP) approved which is located in the community protection area for Challenge, California and have a very thorough working knowledge of the entire Yuba County area
In 2023 I and RPF Michael Santuccio prepared the "Environmental Review Report for an Exempt Project Concow-Yankee Hill Fuel Reduction Notice of Exemption for the Yankee Hill Fire Safe Council in Concow, California (Butte County) which encompassed over 63,000 acres
I am a very good "compass person", work well on my own as well an in a group and I am the consummate "team player" possessing a very strong emphasis on training future foresters
The following areas are something I would be very proficient in a leadership/trainer role within a project based environment which could create a plethora of "teaching moments": timber cruising, silviculture, timber marking, compass work, environmental protection, archeology, mapping, and botanical and wildlife surveys
I have been involved with land exchanges between private and Federal agencies
In recent years I have completed 32 THP's/NTMP's while submitting and receiving approval from Cal Fire for a good number of public utility right-of-ways, mitigated negative declaration documents, drought mortality exemptions, CFIP presentation and documentation and hazard fuel reduction work with special emphasis on mechanical fuel removal methods include thinning, masticating, and pruning
Being from Paradise, California (and having lost my home in the 2018 Camp Fire which is rebuilt) it has been only fitting to have completed over 200 post fire recovery exemptions and emergencies for people from my community
My immediate work area encompasses the following counties: Yuba, Plumas, Butte, Nevada, Placer, Sierra, Lassen, Tehama and Eldorado.
Company Forester
Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI)
01.1982 - 01.1989
Before I had received my Registered Professional Forester (RPF) license I worked for Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) in the Feather River Division and Bohemia, Inc at Grass Valley and Lincoln as a Company Forester
In a time frame extending from 1982 through 1989 one of my main duties for both companies was that of "Purchasers Rep" for a tremendous amount of USFS timber sales (I recollect somewhere in the neighborhood of 35 sales) on both the Plumas National Forest (PNF) and Tahoe National Forest (TNF)
Most of the sales I was responsible for with SPI on the PNF were in the Sierra Valley area and the Bucks Lake area
For Bohemia, Inc
My territory on the TNF centered more on all sales between Foresthill and Placerville.
Forester
Chestnut Ridge Forestry
Cloudcroft, NM
Working as a one-man crew and utilizing NSDI Standards I did a form of common stand exam utilizing a single macroplot (2 chains - 132') to calibrate vegetation attributes field data to current and/or future aerial photography
The fieldwork required recording all data using a Dell-Axiom PDR
We recorded geographic coordinates (noted to relocate the plot) and basic information such as data measured, observer, plot type and size
Ancillary data such as physical attributes (slope, elevation, aspect, hydrology, parent material, soils) of the plot location was also gathered to guide interpretation of vegetation
Species composition of the plot was based on vertical structure and physiognomy of the plot including name and dated taxonomic reference of all recorded taxa
Middle and lower tiers of the NVC hierarchy (levels 4-8) required identification of genera, species, and finer taxa (subspecies, varieties)
We also measured canopy cover
FIA plots were done with a two man crew recording all pertinent data with a Dell-Axiom PDR
We were responsible for measurement and re-measurement of plots consisting of a cluster of four sample points, with three of the points located 120' from the central point at 0, 120, and 240 degrees azimuth
Each point in the cluster was surrounded by a 24-foot fixed-radius subplot where trees 5 inches (DBH) and larger were measured
The four subplots totaled almost 1/6 acre
Each subplot contained a 6.8-foot fixed-radius microplot where saplings (from 1" to 4.9" DBH) and seedlings were measured
All four microplots totaled approximately 1/75 acre
The microplots were offset from subplot centers (12.0 feet at an azimuth of 90 degrees) to minimize seedling trampling
Each subplot was surrounded by a a 58.9' fixed-radius macroplot, which was used to include large trees (> 40.0 inches DBH) and mortality.
Forester
Mountain Forestry
Grass Valley, CA
Before obtaining my license to practice Forestry I worked as a forester for Mountain (May of 1989 until the beginning of 1996)
I primarily aided in the timber harvest process
Duties ranged from timber cruising and appraising timber, timber marking, and general preparation to provide adequate protection for wildlife, water, soils, geology, and archeology, and to provide for optimum fire safety
I quickly developed my computer skills, working with Microsoft Word, Word Perfect and Excel
I wrote or aided in writing many harvesting documents during each year
I learned to use GIS, ArcGIS, GPS and Georeference as part of THP preparation
I had the opportunity to work with several State and Federal agencies in the course of operations
I was instrumental in the layout of an extensive timber cruise involving a land exchange with the U.S
Forest Service and Richard Brown & Walt Saunders in the Feather Falls area near Oroville, CA.
