The past experience I had with different hotels I worked for during my internships had negatives and
positives. I learned how the hospitality industry operates , with the South African hospitality industry it
differs slightly to what I as a student learns on the book , simply because the rules or operations in the
textbooks are international. Some hotels showed me independence to some tasks , in a way showed
me discipline for when I’m actually working a full time job in the future. I learned all sorts of skills in the
different departments I worked at ( front office, food and beverage, housekeeping, kitchen). With the
criticism I received from the different hotels , they made me stronger and be a better person to other
colleagues at the workplace.
Our college provides us with WIL(work integrated learning) for two months and two months in
campus . My first internship I had completed in South Africa Cape Town I started with food and
beverages was a waitress a host and did room service. I had learned how to serve guests in breakfast
buffet , lunch and dinner which was a la carte. I had then attended the coffee shop close the lobby.
My second internship was also in Cape Town which I was in the kitchen. I didn’t attend much as it was a
busy hotel the only experience I had gained from the kitchen was prepping for the hot and cold kitchen ,
and preparing the staff breakfast and lunch. I would also volunteer to prep for any banquet going on
within the hotel.
My third internship was in Durban another city, I was in the housekeeping department. In this hotel I
had experienced more than just the housekeeping tasks but also gained knowledge and wisdom from
the hotel itself. I was a room attendant where I learned how to make the bed dust the guestroom , mop,
clean the bathroom and the carpet. As time went by , I went to public areas where I had cleaned the
lounge/waiting area , the guest’s toilet , elevator and many more.
My last fourth for the year 2022 was also in Durban where I was in the front office department. I
gained independence more compared to the previous hotels. The knowledge I gained depended more
on my textbooks than reality , I had learned how to check in and check out the guests , assist guests
around the hotel . I also attended switchboard whereby I’d take calls through all upcoming calls.
I may not have enough experience but I truly believe with the local internships I received and
international internships I will receive I will be as good as a full time employee and widen my
experience as much as I can.
I chose to take drastic measures and travel the world, and my fifth internship was in Abu Dhabi, where I worked in front office I have to admit that I really enjoy working at the front office, and it has improved my ability to communicate. I can engage with guests, solve problems, show empathy, and go above and beyond to make them feel at home. I completed my six-month internship. Working with people of other nations was a major benefit to my continuing career, and cultural differences were a big change for me. It was an honor to work in Middle Eastern hospitality, which differs from African hospitality.
Since all of my coursework has focused on American hospitality, I was ecstatic to be able to put my abilities to use in the United States during my most recent internship, which is presently taking place at Casa Marina Key West, Florida. As I had anticipated from my studies, I am still working in the front office and am doing really well. I really adore the American hospitality culture. I am capable of resolving issues with the property and guest complaints. I would adore seeing more of the cultures of other states. My voyage has only just begun, and I plan to see as much of the United States as I can.
