Scientific Courses Completed
Introduction to Biomedical Sciences with lab, This introductory course provided students with information covering basic human body systems and their functions. Some common health conditions, such as cancer, sickle-cell anemia, and cardiovascular diseases, were topics of discussion. The accompanying laboratory session highlighted skills and basic laboratory methods that would be necessary for future involvement in other scientific labs.
Human Genetics with lab, This course took a deep dive into the biology behind human genetics covering topics such as probability, mechanics of inheritance, abnormalities on sex chromosomes and contemporary issues surrounding human genetics. The laboratory section of this course was centered around an experiment involving drosophila melanogaster flies and analyzed the inheritance of both wild-type and mutant genes that occurred throughout the generations.
Human Anatomy with lab, Human anatomy was one of my favorite courses that I completed. The course focused on the different components of each of the human body systems and really connected the dots between each of the body systems. My lab experience was unique in that Missouri State University is one of the few universities that obtains human cadavers for the anatomy lab sections. Students were provided with hands-on learning experience of the human body and were a part of the dissection process throughout the course.
Biomolecular Interaction with lab, Personally, this course brought together my chemistry knowledge that I had obtained with my biology background and made the connection between the two different sciences. The course covered information relating to molecular chemical reactions that occur in the body and how those reactions are used to regulate certain biological processes.
Immunology with lab, This course covered topics that are related to how the human immune system functions as well as the different immune cells that allow for a properly functioning immune system. Other topics discussed include autoimmune disorders, vaccines, and immunity. I found this course to be especially interesting as I completed it amidst the covid-19 pandemic.
