Working as District Manager with PCA international gave me the chance to grow my leadership skills. Hiring, firing, ordering inventory for studios, and arranging the travel/work schedules for both salesmen and photographers across three states. I also balanced books and turned in payroll information weekly. After being trained by a brilliant Regional Manager, I ran things with my own strategies and ideas added. After a year and a half of hiring and training the right people, my district was among the top in the country for profit and commissions. (Prior to pursuing my Medical Lab degree I was with the company for 5 years)
About 8 years ago I created and ran a teen center in Lake Park, IA. It became a huge success in no time. Finding community sponsors and volunteers, advertising, planning activities and food were all tasks that I carried out. It was very well attended for two years before we lost our building space. However, it helped many teens who have since become adults. There were important relationships built and lives that found purpose in the family environment it provided. The Daily Globe did a story on it.
Reluctantly, a few years ago I was put on the outreach committee at the Methodist Church that I attend in Lake Park. After a couple years I was made committee head. And really didn't feel i was up for the extra work. However, it was the "best year of outreach activities that we have seen" according to some of the church leaders. I am very pleased with the results of my efforts and I found unexpected satisfaction in having the extra responsibilities.
And also recently here at ORHC, when asked to be an SEA, I truly enjoyed the learning, planning, practicing and extra work that it created. I believe when given a responsibility I tend to throw myself into it and make it a priority. I enjoy using my energy to help and improve any situation. If given the Lead Med Tech role, I'd make it my own and give it my all.
