Working inside a prison facility I had to work with incarcerated individuals in different custody levels which required different levels of supervision. Working inside a prison facility you encounter a diverse range of behaviors and actions requiring the utilization of tactical verbal skills to de escalate situations before they evolved into greater and often times unsafe situations to even include use of force situations.
This meant being knowledgeable in my use of force policy and continuum. Often times we encounter force situations that rapidly evolve and de escalate and remaining diligent in my knowledge and training force options has been a priority for myself. Being a member of Washington State Penitentiary's Emergency Response Team (ERT), we trained with multiple force options to include: intermediate force options eg; gas (OC, CS, CN) 40mm multi launcher, 37mm launcher (direct and skip fire rounds) Shotgun (bean bag(s) distraction diversion rounds) batons, grenades (stinger, OC/CS) riot shields, EID shield.
We trained a lot in fight intervention and team tactics and utilizing tactical formations and riot shields/gear. We trained and were certified on TASER X2 and EID Shield which was another force option requiring additional policy review and understanding.
Working in the community for the last several years I’ve had the ability and privilege to establish a good working network with people ranging from: prisons, county jails, community field offices, re entry centers and law enforcement. This exposed me to a lot of similar yet different processes all over the section which allowed me to communicate and build more solidarity between similar agencies within booking processes and information required.
Working Extraditions and Transportation we move individuals: releasing from custody, in custody field arrests/secretary warrants, court orders, Prison releases, extraditions, and ER clearances. This all requires remaining diligent in multiple policies in multiple fields eg; prisons vs community.
