Designing an Integrated Gymnasium with STREAM and Labs

  • Project overview: With the Pastor, I helped lead the design and implementation of a school gymnasium with four classrooms, integrating STREAM spaces, a robotics lab, a science lab, and a classroom to support interdisciplinary learning.
  • Planning and stakeholders: I coordinated with the Pastor and the Diocese of Venice Building Department, architects, and general contractors to define program needs, accessibility, safety, equipment, and budget constraints.
  • Design decisions: To maximize flexible use, the gym includes a movable partition to create separate instructional zones, reinforced floors and power/data drops for robotics and lab equipment, fume- and ventilation-controlled areas for the science lab, and modular furniture to support both hands-on STREAM activities and traditional lessons.
  • Outcome and impact: The completed facility supports project-based learning, enabling students and staff to run concurrent physical education, engineering challenges, science investigations, and classroom instruction in a single, adaptable space that aligns the environment with curriculum goals.
