Accomplishments

  • Significant milestones in the overhaul of Maintenance department with the objective of improving crane reliability, reducing operational expense (standby and repair expense), while smoothing capital outlay and creating rolling 5 and 20 year STS capital plans across six locations (Norfolk International Terminals/Virginia International Gateway/Richmond Marine Terminal/NewPort News Marine Terminal/Portsmouth Marine Terminal and Empty Yard/The Virginia Inland Port).
  • Restructured ILA maintenance departments with focus on asset level teams, Quay Crane Mechanic and Electrical technicians, ASC MT/ET, Strad/Shuttle MT/ET, and fabricator.
  • Created 12 person technician specialist team who in addition to core technician responsibilities, assumed a qualified worker role (per OSHA definitions), and certified fellow technicians in core competencies and executed qualification card check offs.
  • Created NLRA compliant incentive structure for ILA technicians.
  • Restructured asset hierarchies to follow a consistent and intuitive structure and created general ledger account codes to match. This allowed both the maintenance system of record (Infor/Hexagon) to match the general ledger.
  • Executed FMEA (failure mode effect analysis) on all major asset classes and created Infor failure codes for all major classes. This allowed portfolio level analysis of high frequency alarms, high frequency parts purchases/failures, and high value failures.
  • Reduced inflation adjusted maintenance expense across all crane asset classes (STS/ASC/Strad/Shuttle).
