  • Company Overview: Medical Respiratory Intensive Care Unit
  • In this role as a Registered Nurse, I am responsible for the safe and effective care of patients with complex metabolic disease processes
  • Common disease processes seen in this ICU include, but not limited to: diabetic ketoacidosis, acute and chronic respiratory failure, cancers of various organs or blood, pulmonary hypertension, hypertensive crisis, liver cirrhosis, renal failure, congestive heart failure, status asthmaticus, status epilepticus, multi-organ system failure, sepsis, shock, cardiac related events, neuromuscular diseases, and Idiopathic pulmonary diseases
  • As a Medical Respiratory Nurse, I am responsible for patient safety above all else as the nurse is the last line of defense before medical mistakes are made
  • We verify orders from providers are appropriate for the patient and their disease, safe to be carried out, and will improve outcomes in the patient’s course of hospitalization as well as anticipating provider interventions for patients

  • This program was completed by presentation of a research project. As a group, we studied the compliance of nursing staff to dedicated sleep protocols for ICU patients to prevent ICU Delirium. Metrics were taken before initiation of a common practice and after practice changes were implemented and we saw there was a significant upward trend of a standard sleep protocol use by nursing staff
  • As well as completion of ECCO case study modules that cover a various medical disease, invasive monitoring devices, and nursing plans of care based on differing patient populations and illnesses as they relate to Intensive Care
  • During my time on the Medical Respiratory ICU, I have joined the CSI Skin Committee.This committee meets every month to audit the skin of our patients to ensure adequate measures are taken to prevent pressure injuries to various parts of the body. Every skin committee audit is followed by a hospital-wide committee meeting in which we discuss our findings and have a seminar on various topics to share with out unit regarding new and improved Evidence Based Practices
  • Opportunity to work in additional Intensive Care units for a more comprehensive experience in critical care; including Coronary Intensive Care, Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care, and Medical Intermediate Intensive Care.
