I entered the phosphate mining industry after graduating high school in 2019, working as a contractor for Mosaic Phosphate Co. I worked for two different companies—Rubber Applications and my current employer, BrandSafway—generally performing the same types of work, including but not limited to sandblasting, coatings, and scaffolding at various phosphate plants, mine sites, and TWIC ports. From day one, safety has been ingrained as the rule above all others due to the dangerous environments we face every day. I started out as a laborer, but through hard work, determination, strong leadership, and proficiency in my trade, I worked my way up to Foreman. I enjoy being hands-on and involved in all types of work while remaining safety-driven. I believe working together to achieve a common goal is one of the key factors in maintaining a safe, productive, and successful work environment.
My duties as a foreman running a crew at multiple Mosaic phosphate plants, mine sites, and TWIC-entry locations included, first and foremost, ensuring the safety of my crew and myself. My responsibilities also included performing tasks such as sandblasting and applying coatings; conducting safety inspections on equipment prior to every use; pulling safe work permits; completing Job Safety Plans (JSPs); working on blast pots; pulling hoses; rigging loads for flying or hoisting; erecting and dismantling scaffolding; operating man baskets and heavy-duty forklifts; and working at various heights and in confined spaces. Additionally, the role required the ability to work 10–16-hour days, think quickly and critically, learn efficiently, order materials and supplies, manage crews effectively, demonstrate strong leadership, maintain housekeeping standards, manage time efficiently, and understand the dangers and risks associated with working at chemical plants, mine sites, and ports
