My class and I won first place in the symposium with a hydraulic wood splitter we made by combining what we learned in Hydraulic and Pneumatic Fundamentals, Programmable Logic Controllers, Electrical and Electronic Fundamentals, Machine Maintenance and Installation, AutoCAD, a bit of robotics, and various safety classes.
We used a small robotic arm that I programmed to pick up a block of wood and move it to where our hydraulic cylinder would push it against a metal wedge to split the wood. The splitting process was programmed not to start until the robot had safely moved out of the way and back to its starting position. After the wood was split, the process would automatically repeat unless stopped manually. I also made a hydraulic print for the project using AutoCAD. The presentation was a success, and the project worked better than we expected.
