  • Inspect locomotives to verify adequate fuel, sand, water, oil and check for mechanical defects, HazMat regulations, or FRA non-compliance defects before departure
  • Signal engineers to begin train runs, stop trains, change speeds, and move cars to fit planned train configurations using telecommunications equipment or hand signals
  • Receive information regarding train or rail problems from dispatchers or from electronic monitoring devices
  • Direct and instruct workers engaged in yard activities, such as switching tracks, coupling and uncoupling cars, and routing inbound and outbound traffic
  • Keep records of the contents and destination of each train car, and make sure that cars are added and removed at proper points on routes
  • Inspect freight cars for compliance with sealing procedures and record car numbers and seal numbers
  • Maintain TWIC card at all times for entry into multiple facilities
  • Physically able to lift 75 lbs or more for train line repairs
  • Work 12 hour rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Operate controls to activate track switches and traffic signals
