My name is Ugo Rivas and started in 2003 as a groundsman with Windy Tree Inc and followed all the steps to become a Foreman. Windy Tree Inc is a Line Clearance contractor for PG&E. From 2003 to 2016 I worked for Windy Tree Inc and in 2016 I got hired on with Caltrans on the tree maintenance department. In 2020 I came back to Windy Tree Inc and I am currently employed by them.
I attend daily safety meetings and converse about any safety concerns we have to deal with in the field. When I get to a location I complete and go over a job hazard analysis with my peers to address all safety hazards that endanger them, bystanders and myself and communicate and exchange ideas on how to mitigate them. I read work request to get location of trees, trees species, prescribed clearance, any concerns or other specific orders. I communicate with customers. I trim trees with a lift truck or by climbing using climbing gear. I also drag brush, chip, cleanup, set up for traffic control, act flagger, operate chainsaws, chippers, blowers and drive commercial vehicles. I make sure the work gets done in a safe and timely manner.
Under direct supervision trim and or remove trees away from state roadways to keep traveling pulic safe. Remove trees that were hazardous or had burn scars from wildfires. I would operate a bucket and climb trees. Operate chainsaws, chippers, spider lift, skid steer and stump grinder. Within the 4 years I worked with Caltrans I promoted to an Equipment Operator II on the landscape crew. I had the opportunity to learn how operate a 10 yard, front end loaders, backhoes, packer( garbage truck) and other heavy equipment. Attend safety meetings and special training courses. Set up road closures, use radios, act flagger. Spray herbicides with spray crew, help repair irrigation lines, weed eat slopes(on ramps/ off ramps/mainline) litter pick, take loads to designated dump sites.
I started as a groundsman dragging brush, chipping, lopping brush, cleaning up, following orders and followed all the steps to become foreman. As a foreman I followed orders and gave orders. I was head of reliability projects in Sonora for several of our crews. I would communicate with customers and tree inspectors to plan work. Trim and or remove trees or limbs to make safe for powerlines. Attend safety meetings and training. Respond to emergency work in all weather conditions day or night. Set up traffic control, act flagger. Solve problems and or any concerns that customers might have.
