Subject: Stellar

As I walk through Unit 1 on many days, my subjective observations are that the patients seem to be very engaged in their treatment.

I want to know why…………and if my observations are correct……….so I started asking lots of questions of staff first and then of patients. I want to know the why so that we can duplicate the engagement.

This is what I have been told:

By multidisciplinary staff:

  • Christine Gordon keeps the patients going from the start of the shift until the end of her shift.
  • Christine does a wonderful community group.
  • Christine’s music groups are wonderful.
  • Christine gets the patients dancing.
  • I think Christine makes a huge difference.
  • She is not just in the milieu, she is “present”.

By patients:

  • I have been on Unit 3 and Unit 1. It is that woman right there that makes the difference. (Pointed at Christine.)
  • One day no one came to community. She made a deal with us. If we would all come she would get with the cafeteria staff to see if we could have a short order meal.
  • She told us that we all have problems, but that everyone else on the unit does too and that we all need to follow the rules (like no feet on the furniture) and focus on getting well.
  • She is professional but she is not just here because it is her job. She wants to help us. You can tell.
  • When I first came I was very upset. She said come on, come with me. She took me to the courtyard and sat in the gazebo while I paced around the courtyard and just screamed. I screamed until I felt better. She knew what I needed and let me do it. I got it all out.
  • She keeps things upbeat. She really makes sure that things stay upbeat.
  • She brought potato chips to the courtyard one day out of her own money because she cares.

Some additional things I know about Christine:

  • She knows why we do things the way we do (like observation rounds, searches of belongings, etc.)
  • It is to maintain safety and is critically important
  • She knows that what she does is invaluable.
  • She takes pride in performing at a high standard.
  • She is human just like the rest of us.

Thank you Christine for role-modeling for all of us. I appreciate you.

Everyone, Please let me know of your observations of what you have seen actually work to engage whole groups of patients. I want to identify and replicate so that we are continually improving what we do so that our patients are cared for better at Laurelwood than at any of the other facilities.
