- To prepare operating rooms by ensuring they are clean, moving equipment around as needed, and verifying all equipment is in working condition and on the appropriate settings.
- Interview patients prior to surgery, ensuring consent forms are signed and correct, surgical site has been marked by surgeon, all patient's questions are answered, and reviewing allergies and medical history.
- Discuss concerns about surgical patients with anesthesiologist and surgeon, for example: when patient did not adhere to NPO instructions, has allergies to medications, abnormal blood glucose in preop, did not discontinue anticoagulants, etc.
- Ensure appropriate positioning of patients on operating table prior to surgery.
- Maintain a sterile environment in the operating room by adhering to aseptic techniques. Communicate to surgeons and surgical techs if sterility is compromised.
- Accurate documentation on patient's medical record throughout the perioperative process.
- Act as a "runner" when additional instruments or supplies are needed in OR.
- Assist with specimen collection and handling.
- Transfer patients from operating room to recovery room on stretchers and in wheelchairs.
- Provide education to patients and families regarding post-operative instructions and pain management before discharge from clinical setting.
- Responsible to keep OR rooms and anesthesia carts fully stocked, frequently checking for expiration dates on supplies and medications.
