MEDICAL SURGICAL UNIT

Administer care to diverse patient populations in a 22 bed hospital unit with a patient ratio of 1:6. Educate patients and families on prognosis, treatment plans and at-home care.

• Perform charge duties when needed, complete daily hospital IDR rounds and identify unsafe patient care practices during morning huddles.
• Demonstrate proficiency with unit-based clinical nursing competencies.
• Maintain awareness and compliance with evolving hospital policies and standards.
• Monitor and observe patients, and accurately record changes in condition and reaction to medications and treatment.
• Administer medications and assist physicians in performing examinations, treatments, and procedures.

ORTHOPEDIC UNIT

Work in conjunction with clinicians and staff to care for Orthopedic patients undergoing joint replacement surgery, ensuring patients are prepared for surgery and move through the care process as indicated by the joint replacement program.

• Collaborate with Orthopedic Physicians/PAs to provide quality services.
• Prepare surgical and orthopedic patients for surgery and ensure patient comfort.
• Provide treatment information to patients and motivate them for recovery.
• Coordinate with a physiotherapist and help patients exercise.
• Perform medical assessment, collect accurate and pertinent data and maintain continuous awareness each patient's health status, making special considerations for age and physical needs.
• Monitor the patient's health and general body condition and report changes and improvements to the doctor.
• Examine wounds for signs and symptoms of infection and maintain overall wound hygiene.
• Manage patient's pain effectively, implementing position changes and cold therapy, activity, timely administration of analgesics with consideration of prior function (chronic pain, assistive device).
• Provide patients with self-care and follow-up care instructions.
• Educate patients on steps to take to manage pain and how to avoid post-surgical infections prior to discharge.
