Work History

01.1996
  • The final product was a card the size of a business card which had cultural or national landmarks on one side and the DID (USA calling numbers on the other side
  • Callers would use one of these DIDs to make a call along with a Personal Identification
  • Number (PIN) which required a caller to scratch off the paint to access
  • When the caller dialed the number, he or she was greeted nicely in the language of choice and was asked to enter the PIN
  • After entering the PIN, the caller was asked for the country of destination for the call
  • By using this feature the caller saved at least 35%-40% off the normal price due to two factors: (1) the discounted rates and incentives from the carriers due to the huge commitments of minutes each month; and (2) using a percentage of funds collected as profits generated by applying a surcharge to each and every call that was made
  • The more calls they made using the same PIN number, the more profits were made to substitute for any loss.

AT&T
01.1995
  • Upgraded business to a hybrid telecom revolution called “The Call Back Method where we opened 100 call shops around the world, predominantly in the Middle East, Latin Countries, Asia and Europe
  • Provided the managers of these call shops with a set of American local access numbers called DIDs
  • Any caller from outside the USA could make a call to the USA or anywhere in the world for a fraction of the cost
  • If the caller were using the in-country phone service (which was hardly existing), they would experience very low quality with excessive noise and difficulty hearing the other party
  • Instead, we implemented a very solid, user-friendly system, which required a customer to just dial the USA number that was assigned and programmed to ring in the USA where the Call Back switch is
  • The customer would call the number and make the number ring once, then hang up
  • The switch would identify the DID (USA number that called) and
  • Walid Alkhatib – Page 4 of 6 automatically would call back the number of the phone from which the call was made
  • When the customer at the other end of the call got a call back from the switch with a caller ID number of the USA DID that he was asked to call and hang up
  • When the customer answered the call, he/she heard a message that told them in their own language, asking them to dial any number in the world using the
  • USA dial tone
  • The dial tone would be from one of the top-tier carriers that we had connected to the call back switch such as, , MCI, Sprint or Verizon
  • The creation of this system caused a huge sensation which was extremely financial lucrative
  • For example, callers in India were paying $2-$3 dollars a minute using INDIA PTT, but the same callers were using our system calling anywhere in the world for a fraction of the cost.

01.1994
  • Business Accomplishments
  • Proudly, I invented and created Phone Cards which saved millions of dollars for citizens and immigrants alike in countries with corrupt practices in charging high rates
  • These high rates prohibited customers from calling their loved ones and checking on their loved ones’ well-being
  • In addition to the Phone Cards, I opened Calling Shops for customers to use in most major countries in Asia, including China, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan
  • This concept was implemented in every major U.S
  • City in the world and made it possible for customers to call their loved ones for at least 5 minutes when they could not possibly afford to call at all previously
  • Through my company’s technology I brought a
  • U.S
  • Dial tone into each customer’s hometown, using American hardware, software and technology of AT&T, Verizon, and MCI
  • Also, I developed and implemented the “Calling Back” concept where a grandmother in India, China or Italy dials a programmed number (DID), and lets it ring once before hanging up
  • The phone would identify the number that had just called and from what country the call originated
  • Within a few seconds a call back initiated by our switch would occur, and the grandmother would receive a call in her language, telling her what number to call to speak to her loved ones
  • This concept prevented the callers from enduring high rates and charges to speak with their loved ones
  • My innovation became extremely popular overnight with a quick return in profit for all involved including the distributer of the $2,
  • Walid Alkhatib – Page 3 of 6 $5, $10, and $20 cards to stores throughout the five boroughs of
  • New York
  • Eventually, the business spread across the United
  • States and became one the fastest growing ventures in history
  • Unfortunately, greedy people became involved, and the industry became overly diluted
  • One of the benefits of this experience for me was seeing the employees that I had mentored and trained to succeed in this industry through hard work and dedication
  • Due to their efforts they have attained financial security that should sustain them and their families for years to come
  • On the other hand, there are persons who tried to take shortcuts and to exploit these cards, but they were used by others who were never seen again
  • This telecom innovation has grown into a $100B industry
  • Accomplishments Chronology, – Started business through manual connections, arranging the time between the two parties and using a two-way calling feature.
