My work has always been so important to me and I have no doubt that I can provide a unique perspective as a Nevada Health Center board member. As a former Practical Nurse trained at Elko General Hospital in 1972, I have a unique historical perspective on healthcare needs in Elko County. I loved that time in my life! Due to the nursing shortage, I had the opportunity to work closely with doctors across multiple hospital departments. From there, I transitioned to a large teaching hospital in Portland, Oregon, where I worked with interns and residents. Our patients—often poor, uninsured, and homeless—showed me firsthand the urgent need for accessible healthcare for vulnerable populations.
Later, I had the opportunity to move to Germany with my family, where I spent five years training soldiers on the dynamics of family violence. It was the best job I ever had! I discovered my ability to work autonomously and learned more from the soldiers' experiences than they probably learned from me.
My true passion emerged when I became a child welfare and early intervention social worker. Foster children, often forgotten by society, became my focus. Despite there being approximately 200,000 children in foster care, they are rarely mentioned in political discussions. The work was challenging some of the hardest I’ve ever done—but I loved every moment of it.
An unexpected opportunity led me to help establish a social work program at Great Basin College. I landed the job despite one of my worst interviews everI was sick, nervous, and hopeful. Somehow, I must have done something right because, in 2005, I became a professor and earned tenure in 2010. I poured my passion for social work into my students, and it paid off. Within the first five years of the program, graduates went on to fill critical positions in child welfare and aging services across Elko County and rural areas like Ely and Winnemucca through the UNR/GBC 3+1 Social Work Program.
After years of public service, I retired but remain active as Community Liaison for Zero Suicides, Elko County, a cause very close to my heart. Suicide awareness is critical, and I’m proud to support an organization that promotes life and hope in our community.
