Accomplishments

A colleague and I had observed over a period of time greater challenges with environmental compliance during construction. In response we initiated and guided the development of an environmental compliance tracking program, an advanced web-based tool that allowed the tracking of a contractor's compliance with environmental expectations and requirements during the construction and restoration phases of a project. Implementation enables the identification compliance strengths, weaknesses and prescriptions for corrective actions, as well as short- and long-range trending. The results of years of trial and error on numerous projects large and small, lessons learned, and the evolution in regulatory oversight and non-governmental organization involvement, the program was a first of its kind in the industry and immediately improved compliance metrics, identified trends, reduced corporate risks viz. violations, fines, and adverse effects to the brand, and, mostly, began to foster greater trust and cooperation between the company and contractors, as the tool required the parties to work together on a daily basis. The innovation was recognized by the Southern Gas Association, which awarded it the Environmental Excellence Award for Technology and Conservation.
