  • Permanent seasonal GS-4 employee
  • Worked 40-70 hours a week on average.
  • Suppressed wildfires with both the use of hand tools and the type 4 engine.
  • Operated a chainsaw on the fire line.
  • Installed hose lays in preparation for prescribed burns.
  • Worked with other crews that needed additional staff in the moment.
  • Performed fuels management in the Manti-La Sal National Forest
  • Collected fuels samples to test fuel moisture. Samples included fir and spruce needles, juniper, sage, and oak leaves, 100 hour fuels, and 1000 hour fuels.
  • Performed station renovations such as painting and minor construction repairs.
  • Performed weekly inspections on government vehicles.

  • Coached basketball, volleyball, soccer, touch football, and disc golf.
  • Set up volleyball and soccer nets and inflated the sports balls before recess.
  • Mentored and encouraged youth to develop strong work ethic by being positive role model and regularly practicing skills.

  • Settled personal disputes between children to the best of my ability and reported inappropriate behavior when I thought it necessary.

  • Operated pumps connected to high-pressure hoses.
  • Laid hose lines and operated nozzles, pumps, hydrants and fire extinguishers.
  • Set up sprinkler systems on protected land.
  • Operated a drip torch.
  • Held the line during prescribed burns.
  • Patrolled previously burned areas and eliminated dangerous hot spots.
  • Worked in tandem with engines and other hand crews.
  • Cleaned, serviced, and maintained fire apparatus in condition of readiness and performed general maintenance of fire department property.
  • Swamped brush and logs away from the black (burned area) during fuel reduction operations.
  • Identified potential hazards and habitat trees during fuel reduction operation and prescribed burns.
  • Stood night watch on hand lines, dozer lines, and roadways.
  • Cooked for my coworkers at camp and in the barracks.
  • Maintained spike camp.
  • Followed safety protocol while traveling to and from work sites via helicopter, airplane, or automobile.
  • Trained continuously to maintain required physical fitness for demanding work.

Warehouse Worker

  • Camarillo is where I completed my fire training through the CCC. Upon arrival on January 2, 2022, I was placed in the warehouse where I kept stock of equipment, gear, and clothing for grade workers and fire crew members. That March, I joined Camarillo Fire Crew 3 for training and completion of the Type 1 competencies, which included certain physical fitness standards, fire line construction capability, and knowledge of relevant equipment. During my time in Camarillo, I also took part in various projects in Thousand Oaks, Santa Clarita, Malibu, and Santa Monica. This included fuels (vegetation) management, road clearance of rock and debris, and trash removal from freeway shoulders, parks, and waterways. I completed the remaining 48 hours of required volunteer service as well. Volunteer work during my time in the CCC varied from assisting with local pop-ups and food banks to trash removal, on the initiative of corpsmembers.

  • Chained brush and logs and fed the chipper during fuel reduction operations.
  • Communicated with my captain, supervisors, and crewmembers via hand-held radio on the fire line, during mop-up operations, and during fuel-reduction operations.

  • Informed and educated local community members about fire prevention and safety.
