Providing developmentally appropriate academic and social-emotional guidance and foundations to students through the following:

  • Preparing and apply academic lessons (in coordination with all department instructors) using inquiry-based and project-based methods in line with the International Baccalaureate (IB) units of inquiry, learner profiles, and key concepts.
  • Collaborating with the instructional team and IB Primary Years Program (PYP) Coordinator by sharing ideas that could enrich children’s learning experience, whether by suggesting impactful project ideas or researching books relevant to the curriculum and units of inquiry.
  • Attending weekly IB training meetings with the IB PYP Coordinator and Head of Preschool, in which ideas are exchanged about how best to apply academic lessons to students in line with IB methods, and also how to assess students at the end of each unit of inquiry. The use and navigation of the IB electronic documentation platform Managebac is also practiced.
  • Encouraging multi-cultural appreciation within the classroom and curriculum in various ways, whether through literature, classroom materials and toys, or traditional holiday acknowledgments and celebrations.
  • Planning and preparing day-to-day lessons and their applications, be it by setting up hands-on games that can best demonstrate daily circle time lessons/unit provocations or deciding which classroom manipulatives can most effectively facilitate the understanding of academic concepts through play.
  • Observing students for academic and behavioral assessments in order to provide the best educational and social-emotional support (or intervention, if need be) for each child.
  • Applying positive developmental communication practices with children according to each child’s individual temperament and needs, whether in disciplinary or non-disciplinary situations - as is in line with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and California state licensing standards.
  • Ensuring that the classroom materials and environment are in accordance with IB, NAEYC, and California state licensing standards.
  • Overseeing and observing children in the classroom, playground, and school grounds in accordance with NAEYC and California state licensing standards.
  • Training in mandated reporting, crisis management and safety/emergency readiness (such as first aid, CPR, seizure and others), as well as child-safe hygienic practices.
