Examining women’s dental disorders through multi-level sex and Gender Analysis: With implications for korean women’s oral health, Asian Women, 37(4), 23–48, https://doi.org/10.14431/aw.2021.12.37.4.23, Feb 2021
I completed almost the entire project independently, from sifting through a flood of databases to writing up the pages for article submission. Professor Ihm and Professor Leem guided me through my first research article. My research on sex/gender differences in oral health and intersectional nature of South Korean women’s oral health was published in Asian Women, an SSCI (Social Sciences Citations Index) journal. Sex/gender differences in oral health is a rarely researched field in dentistry, despite its potentials of bringing a new paradaigm in dentistry. I reviewed preexisting research on sex/gender differences in two dental disorders (Sjogren’s syndrome and dental fear) with an exceptionally high prevalence among women. I aimed to shed light on areas that previously lay in the blind spot of both Gendered Innovations and traditional male-dominated medical academia. Though the article adopted overarching themes of Gendered Innovations, I devised a unique analytical method of pattern/cause/cure to dissect the two dental-related disorders through the gendered lens. Through my pattern/cause/cure analysis, I investigated what has been established and what remains veiled in women’s oral health.
