  • I have been a special education teacher for about four years now for community service at the JCC of Midwest Chester
  • I come in on Sundays through a program "Sunday Funday"
  • I spend my time on those days helping young children in the age group of 4-5
  • I help them interact safely with other kids, facilitate their understanding of social context, what is wrong and what is right, and give them an overall "fun day" through playing and socializing with them
  • In my time spent with them, I've observed rapid progress. - Connor, an eight-year-old who only talked about Thomas the Tank Engine, grew taller than me and began lecturing me on astrophysics - I've seen Zeze, who had trouble communicating one word responses, start to carry conversation
  • My four years with these kids has been a wonderful journey in my life and I hope theirs as well.
  • I also had taken a course called CLASSP which was an advanced certification for working with autistic kids
  • For it I completed 100+ fieldwork hours, related essay assignments, and attended classes.

  • In my time working during the two summers I was there I progressed children from being deathly afraid of getting their ears wet to freestyling in under two months (of daily effort)
  • I also helped older children lose their fears of the water and reach a better swimming capability.
  • The other half I would be guarding an extremely hectic and filled pool with kids splashing, attempting to roughhouse, and causing overall mayhem
  • This got me pretty adept at preventing trouble and calling out hazardous situations
  • In my time working I had to deal with two on deck seizures, and a handful of drowning incidents
  • But with each one I got better with handling pressure and staying focused on my responsibility.
  • Ensured swimmer safety by vigilantly monitoring pool area and enforcing rules.
  • Prevented accidents through regular equipment inspections and maintenance.
