Leadership/Precepting

  • During my time at Johnson City Medical Center in the Cardiac ICU and at Pikeville Hospital in the Cardiac/Surgical ICU, I had the opportunity to participate in orienting and precepting new graduate nurses. This experience allowed me to help guide new nurses as they transitioned from the classroom to clinical practice, focusing on developing their critical thinking, prioritization, and patient care skills in a high-acuity environment. I worked closely with them to reinforce evidence-based practices, enhance their confidence in managing complex cardiac and post-surgical patients, and promote teamwork and communication within the interdisciplinary care team. Supporting these new graduates as they gained independence and competence was both rewarding and a valuable leadership experience.
  • For my thesis project, I conducted a comprehensive community health assessment in Dickenson County, focusing on access to nutritious food and the impact of limited healthy options on residents’ well-being. After collecting and analyzing data on local food availability, socioeconomic factors, and health outcomes, I presented my findings to the Dickenson County Board of Supervisors. My presentation highlighted key areas of need and proposed actionable strategies to improve food accessibility. As a result, the board implemented initiatives to expand healthier food opportunities within the community, contributing to long-term efforts to promote better nutrition and overall public health.
