Welder/Laborer/Excavator Operator

Hultquist Homes
Anchorage, Alaska
08.2019 - 07.2021
  • I started on the Clean up Crew tidying up the homes before the homeowner came by for a final check. This included sweeping the floors, wiping windows, picking up trash and debris. My duties also included screwing down floors, caulking light fixtures, and doing any odds and ends that the house needed before it was considered finished.
  • After that I moved to the Excavation Crew. I drove construction equipment to excavate and grade land on road beds. I calculated slopes and grades, performed ground surveys and used pipe lasers for pipe laying. I dug ditches and trenches using trench rollers, rammers and shovels for small-scale excavations. I cut down trees' to clear areas of future construction. As well as setting gravel and other materials for grading and height buildup purposes. Included in these jobs was my use of heavy machinery: excavators, compactors, bulldozers, and smaller tools such as shovels, chainsaws, etc.
  • And finally I was moved to Pile Driving. I carried the pipe from it's storage to the trailer, strapped it down and set it to rights. Then Moved the pipe off of the trailer to the site to be driven. I would bring the tools from the truck to be used such as a sledge hammer, grinders, a band saw, and the cording and cables required for welding. I would set up the pipe for the operator to drive into the ground. All the while checking periodically that it was level and in the correct placement adjacent the home. I would then grind the top of the pipe that was sticking out of the ground and weld another pipe on top of it (Very rarely did we ever hit enough resistance to only use one pipe). I would then repeat the process and check measurements and weld the bracket on the top of the pipe.

Cmom Technician

First Utility District Of Knox County
Farragut, Tennessee
09.2021 - 02.2022

As a CMOM Technician the day would start at 7am with the crew gathering at the warehouse for our morning meeting. During which we would go over recent developments, current events, and a rough idea of the coming day. I was on the Jet Truck. My duties were to follow a map (given every 1-3 months) and flush sewer lines from one section to the next until eventually we flushed the entire district and would be given a new map to flush. On top of that if any issues were discovered by the rest of the crew they would call me to come flush their line and remove any blockage. I would also regularly use a small modified bulldozer and clean out the bile pit and transfer it's contents to one of the waste disposal dumpsters. Then, for once week every few weeks each crew member was required to take his (there were no women in our crew) turn on call. On call responsibilities included:

  • Taking the on call phone home with us and keeping it charged and nearby
  • Answering every call no matter what
  • Responding to any work related event (Blockage, Customer overflow, backups, etc.)
  • Calling another crew member in to help (Legally we were not allowed to do it by ourselves)
  • Marking our time, where we went, what we did, and why we were needed to attend it.

Die Maintenance Technician

Aisin Automotive Casting
Clinton, TN
04.2022 - 08.2022

The Die Maintenance crew was responsible for the repair and continuity of the Die Casts that produced the aluminum pistons, timing chain covers, and many other automotive parts. It required knowledge of welding, grinding, tape measures and other extremely fine and sensitive tools for measurement. There were 4 positions within this department and I was trained on all of them.

  • Sand Blasting was the simplest position but the most dreaded. In this position you had rollers with broken die's on them. You had to grab the correct ones, disassemble the cast into its bare components, put only certain pieces into the sandblaster and blast them. These steps usually took 30 minutes to an hour depending on the die and how clean your superiors wanted it that day. Then you removed the die, used an air gun to blow all the sand out of the cracks and crevices and put the pieces on a tray that then goes on the clean die rollers for the next position to deal with.
  • The Table was the second position and everyone's favorite. At this position you would grab a sandblasted die tray and bring it to your table. At your table you would check the paperwork for the die to find clues as to whats wrong with it and then get to work grinding, welding, drill pressing, and finally going through the paperwork for the die ensuring you did everything possible to fix the problem. It may sound simple here but it usually took a full day or more to do a single die.
  • Coating was the second least favorite position. In coating you had to take the finished dies from the table and coat them. There were different coatings for different kinds of dies but the coating was to mitigate aluminum sticking to the cast. This position required you to clean the dies, put caps on areas that coating shouldn't go, throw them into a 1500 degree oven for 15 minutes before coating, coating them with a spray gun and then wire brushing the excess off, and then putting them into another oven for an hour to harden and cure the coating. It's extremely hot in this position and burns were commonplace.
  • The final position was Assembly. In assembly you would take the dies from coating and cool them off before taking the pieces and put them back together. Glue's and rubber O rings were required as they would be destroyed throughout the other processes leading here. Time per die in this position was around 45 minutes to an hour. then they were put on the final roller for an entirely different crew to grab.

This crew worked Monday through Friday for 8 hour shifts with 1st shift through 3rd shift working every third weekend (Weekends were 12 hours). With this job being in production at times we would be forced into 12 hour days at a moments notice. Changing the schedule to twelve twelve hour shifts and then your weekend off.
