I believe that music education is a powerful vehicle for the growth of a person, intellectually, emotionally and socially. Music is, at its core, a uniquely expressive art form that leads to self discovery in people that is rarely matched elsewhere. It allows students to discover who they are, who they want to become, and the discipline it takes to achieve it. It also paves the way for students to begin to express themselves emotionally, learning how to effectively communicate their feelings and connect with the world around them in deep and meaningful ways.
When students are truly engaged in music, they are not only developing skills in artistic expression, they are developing essential cognitive habits and a strength of character that will serve them far beyond the walls of the classroom. In music the students learn persistence, discipline and responsibility, which comes as a result of the processes of practicing and perfecting challenging music. The process of collaborating as part of an ensemble shows students that through consistent, sustained effort, they can achieve excellence. This type of discipline leads to a strong lifelong model of personal improvement.
Music also provides a safe space for individual expression. Students often are inexperienced when it comes to articulating complex ideas and emotions, and music gives them a platform to explore and expand on these things through interpretation, improvisation and creative performance. When practicing and performing music, students are finding their own identities and learning the identities of their peers, fostering emotional intelligence through confidence, open mindedness, and empathy. These qualities are essential for students to have healthy personal growth and meaningful interactions in their communities.
Ultimately, my philosophy on music education is about nurturing disciplined, thoughtful, diverse, and expressive individuals and helping them to grow not just as musicians, but as people who employ emotional intelligence and are capable of self reflection and improvement. My aim is to help students realize that they are capable of much more than what they believe themselves to be.
