  • Staff RN, Charge nurse and Relief Night House Supervisor. I was started as a staff RN for the general surgery unit and in 1989 became charge of the surgical unit.
  • Types of surgeries on this unit included: general surgeries such as appendectomies and cholecystectomies; more extensive GI surgeries; gynecological surgeries; gender reassignment surgeries; urological surgeries.
  • Staff RN responsible for cares and decision making skills to support medical protocols in caring for the general surgery acute care patient
  • The unit combined a few years later to include orthopedic surgeries of back, hand, knee and hip.
  • Responsible for doing the scheduling of staff for the unit, and orienting new employees.
  • Other responsibilities included: doing annual employee evaluations, counseling as needed, maintaining positive morale, introducing new policies and procedures, and was involved with interviewing of potential employees.
  • As Relief Night House Supervisor, my duties included: being the hospital liaison for the night time; making sure there was appropriate staffing for the morning shift; intervening for problems or concerns by both staff and patients/ patient's family members; and lastly, obtaining drugs from the pharmacy from 12 midnight until 6am when the pharmacy reopened, as this facility did not have 24 hour pharmacy services.
  • Supervisors are also responsible for calling on call staff such as OR or Radiology techs for off shift services such as emergency procedures.
  • In 1998, the surgical unit became 2 units and I moved from the ortho/GYN surgical unit to the Bariatric/Gen Surgery unit as night charge nurse. My duties remained the same as charge nurse for the bariatric/gen surgery unit.

Staff RN/ Charge Nurse, Corona Community Hospital, Corona, CA - July 1986 to Sept 1987

  • Staff RN caring for general surgical patients using decision making skills to support medical protocols during the afternoon 3p - 11p shift. Typical surgeries included appendix, gallbladder, and urological surgeries
  • Floated to various other medical surgical units as needed
  • Because charge nurse of the med-surg unit 6 months after starting in the hospital. Charge nurse responsibilities included delegating assignments to the nurses, as well as caring for a list of patients. Coordinating bed placement with the supervisor and working with recovery room to transfer fresh post-operative patients to the unit.

  • Majority of students appreciate the content taught in Nrsg 301 - Adult Health I (previously Nrsg 308 - Adult Health I) - my strengths lie in how I present content, including stories from experiences from my nursing experience
  • Students stated they learned a lot from the course and they learned how to study for med-surg content
