I demonstrate personal empowerment by setting goals, asking for help, learning new skills, surrounding myself with positive people, speaking up about things I believe in, and holding myself accountable. Furthermore, I demonstrate academic excellence by operating with integrity, implementing good study habits, doing my best, and not beating myself up when I make mistakes or do not do as well as I had planned.
Being the president of the Black Student Union makes me proud. In addition to having outstanding recommendations, I am pleased to mention that my application was exceptional. I think I've done a good job so far as president, and I will continue to lead the club successfully and ensure that we can look back on this year with a sense of satisfaction and success. Recently I shared the idea of having my cousin, Endia Beal an artist, curator, and author who uses photography to reveal the often overlooked experiences unique to people of color come to Weaver to discuss her work, her perspective as a black woman in a white-dominated industry, and her artistry to entrepreneurship. As a result, she came to my school on October 25th. I was excited because Mrs. Gagnon (Art Teacher) and Mrs. Smith (BSU Supervisor) loved the idea and now the students at Weaver will have the opportunity to experience an extremely successful, Black female artist who is from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. My hope is that her visit inspired every student in any performing visual art to use their gifts and talents to effect change in the world.
During the pandemic, I submitted a virtual audition and application to Weaver and was accepted as a member of the vocal program.
Based on my leadership skills in the class, I was asked by Mrs. Bergsma to supervise Weaver's Spring Fashion Show as the Lead Backstage Manager. This fashion show culminates the learning experiences of the apparel division of CTE. As a member of the chorale, I was extremely pleased to be selected for so much responsibility in a new territory.
Because of our love for K-Pop, a student in the dance program and I started a K-Pop club at Weaver. The purpose of the club was to bring together other K-Pop fans and give us a place to discuss Korean music and culture. Although the club only lasted for half of the year, it was exciting to envision something and watch it unfold. It was then that I realized how rewarding it is to be with like-minded people and to execute plans so that a vision manifests.
I have received a WoW award at my job, Sky Zone which is received when parents compliment you on their review. Parents normally just say positive words about their experience so when they say your name it is highly noted and commended by the company.
In 11th grade, I accepted the invitation to be a member of the National Society of High School Scholars which was an honor since I had been a member of the National Beta Club in middle school.
In fifth grade, I began taking guitar lessons. I worked diligently in learning how to play the acoustic guitar for five years. As a result, I am now able to use my musical knowledge of guitar coupled with my vocal studies to write my own melodies and vocal arrangements. I can get lost in not only my music, but music in general, and lose track of time because I love it so much.
One of my fondest memories of playing guitar has been playing Christina Perri's, A Thousand Years for a musical competition in middle school and coming in third place. I have also written a couple of songs while at Weaver with classmates.
