I work in a class 100 cleanroom on an A/B schedule every other Wednesday-Saturday, 12 hours a day.
Throughout the day I am programming machines to apply different films on to silicon disks that in the end
become microchips. Engineers from higher up put in orders for us to apply these films and we seal them
up and ship them somewhere else to have a different tool apply a different film to to these "wafers" as
we call them. Oracle, Microsoft Excel and Outlook are all used to track the orders we process throughout
the day.
I don't just operate deposition machines but also metrology machines that measure the thickness of the
of the film depositioned in the wafer down to the Angstrom. Quality is our middle name. I learn something
new at this job every day still and I enjoy it very much.
inspection where our engineers problem-solve the defects or return them to the vendors.
My responsibilities require me to not only support the cleanroom workers but also keep inventory
accurate. Every replacement of a defective part requires multiple transactions to make sure it's reflected
accurately in inventory. Everything is done through the Oracle company management software recently
implemented before my start here. I should also have access to the MES system- the cleanroom's
procedural management software but I have yet to gain access due to technical difficulties IT is currently
working on. I've participated in weekly cycle counts multiple times in the last four months. Communication
through email is necessary because no managers (of mine) are present during my shift (4:00pm-4:30am).
My shift leader is the cleanroom shift leader which makes their knowledge of my position very limited.
I am on my own providing them support from outside the cleanroom. We keep in touch live through
walkie-talkie. Since I don't have a constant influx of defective or missing parts to replace at all times, I
work mostly in receiving or order picking depending on day-shift's priorities.
For my first two years at this steel fastener company, I pulled hardware for a portion of the time- where
most shippers start. I spent some time shipping and receiving and tracked inventory. Everything was
sorted and put into stock by the end of each day. I was then moved to the three-person packaging team.
We were the primary team for Portland Bolt and packaged and shipped between 50,000-70,000 pounds of
steel a day during the summer season. We JUST got a pallet wrapping machine last year, it’s great to
have. I worked the later shift to load trucks at the end of the day. I’ve loaded trucks on the shipping
dock and flatbeds daily. I am experienced in operating forklifts, man-up lifts and sitdown lifts. I am also
experienced in operating bridge cranes.
My last two years at Portland Bolt I spent learning and mastering their shipping
supervisor position. It took me about six months to get comfortable and confident at it. UPS Ground,
Fedex Freight and Peninsula all stop by daily to pick up our shipments. I am responsible for running
quotes and finding the best way to send these steel fasteners unless the carrier is already specified.
Shipments consist of steel rods up to 48’ long with threads and galvanized
finish. Therefore, I commonly work with flatbed carriers as well. We do ship internationally and of course
this requires a lot more attention to detail. I ensure everything is packaged on international pallets/
crates. I create the Commercial Invoice, provide the Material Reports and Certificate of Conformance
and the make up the Shipper’s Letter of Instructions (if required). I am frequently on the phone and
communicating via email with our customers and carriers to coordinate the shipments to them. I also
coordinate shipments coming back to us.
I am in charge of package quality assurance and manage a six-person packaging team. The summer is
a very busy time being the only one handling shipments outgoing including international shipments and
some incoming shipments. I'm constantly handling paperwork, exchanging emails and phone calls and
still upholding well-standing relationships with my team. I handle pressure very well and can multitask
efficiently; the secret to this is post-it notes.
