While attending The University of Texas-Arlington, I worked the graveyard shift as a prayer counselor. This position required in-depth knowledge of the Bible and ability to assess the needs of the individual. The call volume was significantly high. Callers would remain on hold for 20-30 minutes to receive prayer. Being a good listener was imperative, as well as the ability to show empathy, sympathy, and concern, but at times assertiveness was necessary. Some callers were suicidal and we had a hot-line access to the Dallas Police Department in the event their intervention was necessary. This was a highly rewarding and satisfying job.
