In 2020 when the country shut down due to the spread of the coronavirus, many families were without jobs and struggled to provide for their families. Not only that, but it was also the time when poor mental health was on the rise. As a result, my mom's job decided to give away 100 bags of food/day for 5 days a week for 3 months (May-August). I served as an assistant for my mom and her co-workers. My tasks included preparing food for the homeless, families with small children (or any children), and the needy as a whole. We gave them a variety of foods from peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, to tuna fish and crackers, and even prepared dessert for them from time to time. In addition to the bags, we gave out 2 gallons of milk per family. I loved being able to do something good for someone, especially since I was aware of the unprecedented times we were in. It's always a pleasure of mine to put a smile on someone's face and simply share my positivity because you never know what someone is going through.
I had the great opportunity to volunteer at the Step Out, Walk to Stop Diabetes event in September of 2023. At this event, I served as a walk lead, where I was responsible for helping lead the entire line of participants (over 200 individuals) on a walking trail across Buffalo Bayou Park in Houston, TX. Although some participants finished later than others, it was truly a joy to see all the faces of people who were so eager to support a good cause. We walked a total of 30 minutes from start to finish and even had a cheer crew who were spread out across the trail we ran to encourage us to make it to the finish line. I have a few family members who are Type 1 diabetic, so I am aware of the significant impact it has on the lives of those it directly affects. I am so appreciative to have been given the opportunity to participate in such a life-changing event, and would do it again if the opportunity permits itself.
In November 2023, I had the pleasure of attending the TNA D9 Celebration Event, where I volunteered alongside other nursing students in the city of Houston. There were nurse preceptors, retired nurses, and even nursing professors from hospitals and universities all across the Texas Medical Center, Woodlands, Sugarland, etc. I served the role of supervising the auction table, where attendees could bid however much they were willing to receive the prizes at stake. I had never attended anything of the sort before, so it was through this experience that I was able to demonstrate my abilities to catch on quickly & be an effective team player!
I assisted with the planning of my Women's Health "baby shower" end-of-semester celebration. I brought a crockpot for the food, as well as helped with game planning. There were over 100 attendees, and everyone loved the games, decorations, and food.
