Corrections Officer:

  • Throughout my career, most of my employers have been in correctional facilities; each facility possessed different challenges and struggles, as they are supervised differently, but they all have the same function: keep each other safe, protect the public, and also protect the weak from the powerful within the walls
  • Providing security for all facilities: performing scheduled and impromptu security checks, conducting cell and inmate searches, and preventing inmate escape
  • Maintaining inmate safety involves observing inmates' behavior and physical appearance, and controlling inmate movement
  • Enforcing state laws and policies involves writing reports, giving verbal directives, and using physical force when required
  • Transporting and escorting inmates, applying restraining devices securely, and driving transport vehicles during transports and custody exchanges
  • Qualifying with various weapons: complete certification course with the Glock model 22 pistol, .38 revolver, Mini 14 shooting .223/.556 cal., 12g shotgun, 40mm launcher with rubber batons, as well as OC and CS gas grenades, taser, shield, and R.E.A.C.T belt. Experience firsthand the effects of OC pepper spray and the X26 Taser
  • Physical altercations: use confrontational avoidance techniques, tactical communications, tools and tactics, self-defense techniques, and controlled force
