LoRicco, J. G., Malone, S., Becker, A., Xue, N., Bagdan, K., Eastman, A., ... & Domocych, D. S. (2025). Aberrant growth and expansion in Penium margaritaceum triggered by disruption of microtubules and the cell wall. Journal of Experimental Botany, 76(4), 961-979.

RESEARCH

  • 2020-2024
  • “Phenotypic plasticity in Penium margaritaceum: Experimental Manipulation of cell expansion and morphogenesis using vinblastine”
  • Skidmore College Microscopy Lab
  • Under the mentorship of Dr. Josie LoRicco, I investigated phenotypic plasticity and cell wall integrity monitoring in Penium margaritaceum. My research focused on how the algae respond to stress such as the fungal-derived enzyme pectate lyase and microtubule-disrupting agents like APM and vinblastine. These treatments led to distinct morphological changes. I analyzed how these stress responses affected cell wall composition, cytoskeletal structure, and subcellular organization. This work provided new insights into plant cell morphogenesis and potential mechanisms related to the evolution of land plants. I presented this research at a science symposium held at Schuylerville High School and contributed to a peer-reviewed publication in the Journal of Experimental Botany.
