Meaningful QI projects

Daily Goal Sheet for Patient Rounds to Decrease Near Misses (2024 - Ongoing)

  • Role: Project Lead
  • Mentors: Dr. Maryna Shayuk (Program Director), Dr. Prashant Sura (Associate Program Director)
  • Objective: Enhance patient safety and reduce near misses by streamlining daily patient rounds.
  • Approach: Led a three-week pilot project, collaborating with two other team members to create a daily goal sheet. The goal sheet focused on key areas like antibiotic adjustments, steroid adjustments, IV fluids, nutrition, pain management, and glucose control. Attending physicians were asked to utilize this sheet during morning rounds to ensure consistent review of these critical elements.
  • Impact: The implementation led to a notable reduction in near misses and improved overall patient care. The project is ongoing, with plans to extend a similar initiative to the ICU units for broader patient safety improvements.

Understanding Racial Inequalities in Lung Cancer Screening (2024 - Ongoing)

  • Role: Project Lead
  • Mentor: Dr. Davis Delay (Director, Residency Clinic)
  • Objective: Investigate the understanding of racial inequalities in lung cancer screening among healthcare providers.
  • Approach: Led a project in which surveys were distributed to healthcare providers to assess their awareness of existing racial disparities in lung cancer screening practices.
  • Impact: The project is ongoing, with future plans to conduct focus group discussions with providers to raise awareness and educate them on these inequalities. The initiative aims to expand into other healthcare disparities areas in the future.

Improving Pneumococcal Vaccination Rates in Outpatient Clinic (2024)

  • Role: Project Lead
  • Objective: Increase pneumococcal vaccination rates in eligible outpatient clinic patients, particularly those under 65 with indications for the vaccine.
  • Approach: Led a quality improvement project analyzing vaccination data from the outpatient clinic, identifying a concerning trend where Hispanic patients had significantly lower vaccination rates compared to other groups. Organized a focus group discussion with residents to raise awareness and address this issue. Implemented an Epic shortcut (dot-prey) to facilitate better tracking and prompt residents to encourage vaccination during patient visits.
  • Impact: The project led to improved awareness among residents, and the introduction of the Epic shortcut helped streamline the process, contributing to higher vaccination rates, particularly among underserved populations.

Streamlining Procedure Licensing for ICU Procedures (2024)

  • Role: Project Member
  • Project Lead: Dr. Maryna Shayuk (Program Director)
  • Objective: Develop a streamlined process for internal medicine residents to achieve procedure licensing for ICU procedures, such as central venous catheter insertion and arterial line placement.
  • Approach: Collaborated with Dr. Shayuk and the team to create comprehensive educational materials and test content aimed at preparing residents for procedure licensing. The initiative focused on enhancing the efficiency and success rate of residents obtaining the necessary certifications for key ICU procedures.
  • Impact: The project resulted in a more structured and efficient process for procedure licensure, ultimately helping residents pass necessary tests and ensuring that they were well-prepared for these critical procedures in the ICU.

Reducing Pneumonia Readmissions (2024)

  • Role: Project Member
  • Objective: Analyze and reduce the rate of pneumonia readmissions in patients discharged from the hospital.
  • Approach: Participated in a quality improvement project focused on identifying key factors contributing to pneumonia readmissions. The team analyzed patient data to identify trends and implemented strategies to address gaps in care during discharge, such as improving follow-up care and patient education.
  • Impact: The project led to a reduction in readmission rates through targeted interventions, improving patient outcomes and contributing to overall hospital quality metrics.

AQSI project: Improving IV Fluid Compliance in Sepsis Patients (2024 - Ongoing)

  • Role: Project Member
  • Project Lead: Dr. Gauri Pikale
  • Objective: Increase compliance with IV fluid administration guidelines for patients with sepsis at Northwestern Medicine.
  • Approach: this quality improvement project is aimed at identifying and addressing barriers to IV fluid administration in sepsis patients. The team conducted a thorough review of patient data and interviewed nursing staff to pinpoint factors contributing to non-compliance.
  • Impact: The project is ongoing, with future plans for focus group discussions with physicians and nurses to develop actionable strategies and improve fluid administration practices in sepsis management.

Educational Leadership

Co-Author, Intern Handbook (2024)

  • Role: Co-Author
  • Objective: Develop an educational resource to support new interns in their transition to clinical practice.
  • Approach: Collaborated with fellow residents to co-author the first volume of the Intern Handbook, which covers essential medical knowledge across various body systems. The handbook provides key information that new interns must know to succeed in their roles.
  • Impact: The first volume has been published and distributed to residents within the program, as well as to an aligned residency program at Rosalind Franklin University. Currently working on the second edition to enhance the content and ensure its continued relevance.

Resident Lecture Series for Medical Students (2024 - Ongoing)

  • Role: Project co-Lead
  • Project Lead: Dr. Tedd Lawrence
  • Objective: Develop and implement a weekly resident-led lecture series for medical students, focusing on common clinical topics.
  • Approach: Took the lead in creating a pilot project where residents deliver educational lectures to medical students on a weekly basis. Collaborated with two fellow residents and expanded the project to include more than 10 residents.
  • Impact: The project is ongoing, with the aim of enhancing medical student knowledge in key clinical areas and fostering a collaborative learning environment between residents and students.

Collaborative Teaching of Clinical Research (2024 - Ongoing)

  • Role: Project Lead
  • Objective: Teach medical students clinical research methodology and writing skills, guiding them through the process of conducting and publishing clinical research.
  • Approach: Leading a project with 16 medical students from Rosalind Franklin University to provide hands-on training in clinical research. The focus is on teaching students how to conduct studies, analyze data, and write research papers. Currently, the team is working on four different research papers, with significant progress being made.
  • Impact: The project has been highly rewarding for the students, with many making notable advancements in their understanding of research methodology and academic writing.
