Adetokunbo Oluwa

As a first-generation African American I have experienced a dual perspective, blending individualistic and collectivist mindsets from American and Nigerian cultures. As a first-year medical student at Meharry Medical College I actively engaged in pre-professional training courses, undergoing rigorous OSCEs, hands-on physical examination training, and refining my medical research skills, featuring multiple research journal clubs and literature reviews. As I continue my journey into Ophthalmology, I am eager to leverage these experiences for impactful contributions in the field of healthcare.

Student National Medical Association(SNMA), Committee member, 06/2023-

• As an SNMA member, I have learned skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, event planning, advocacy, networking, cultural competence, mentorship, and community outreach. These skills have been valuable for my future medical career, as they have enhanced my ability to work effectively with diverse populations, advocate for health equity, and collaborate with colleagues in various settings.

Meharry Ophthalmology Interest Group (MOIG), Committee member, 06/2023-

• As a member of Meharry’s Ophthalmology Interest Group, I have learned unique skills such as specialized knowledge in eye care, vision screenings, ophthalmic procedures, eye health education, and collaboration with ophthalmologists. Additionally, I have developed skills in organizing vision-related community outreach events, conducting eye health research, and advocating for eye care access. These experiences have deepened my understanding of ophthalmology as a medical specialty and prepared me for future endeavors in eye care or related fields.

Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas(ANPA), Committee member, 06/2023-

• As a member of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA), I have learned unique skills such as cross-cultural communication advocacy for healthcare issues affecting underserved communities, and networking with Nigerian healthcare professionals.

Debate Club-(2024) In high school, I discovered my passion for debate, finding joy in the art of persuasion and critical thinking. Engaging in spirited discussions fueled my intellectual curiosity and honed my communication skills. Now, as a first-year medical student at Meharry Medical College, I am eager to channel that passion into creating a debate club. Inspired by my experiences, I envision a platform where students can explore complex healthcare issues, exchange diverse perspectives, and cultivate the skills necessary for effective advocacy and collaboration in medicine. This initiative reflects my commitment to fostering a vibrant intellectual community and empowering future healthcare leaders.

Goodwill of North GA, Alpharetta GA, Volunteer, 11/2015, 02/2016,

• Worked in the garage accepting donations and organizing items into their designated areas. While volunteering at Goodwill, I gained skills in customer service, teamwork, organization, and time management. This experience enhanced my ability to collaborate with others and contribute positively to the community.

ANKH Tutoring, Washington DC, Tutor, 01/2016-05/2016

• Provided academic assistance, specifically in science, to underprivileged elementary students. Volunteering with ANKH tutoring group, I developed skills in mentoring, communication, patience, and adaptability. Working with city elementary students honed my ability to support learning and foster academic growth within the community.
