RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

  • Institution: San Francisco State University
  • Date Completed: Fall 2022 – Spring 2024
  • Advisor: Derrick Groom
  • Position: Research Student
  • Accomplishments: creating a presentation, creating a poster, writing a Prospectus, presenting my poster at SACNAS 2023
  • Research Description: Currently, working on a research project where I investigate how hummingbirds, specifically Calypte anna, manage their body temperature in various environments and during physical activity. The hypothesis proposes that these birds employ a combination of panting and adjusting blood flow under their skin to maintain an optimal temperature. To investigate this, I intend to utilize tools such as thermal cameras and respirometry equipment. This will help visualize the different heat dissipation methods used by Calypte anna and measure their CO2 and H2O levels to understand heat release during flight and post-exercise. The aim is to gain insights into the mechanisms hummingbirds employ to regulate their body temperature. This study holds broader significance for comprehending their biology and could contribute to conservation efforts.
  • Date Completed: Fall 2021 – Spring 2022
  • Advisor: Christopher Moffatt
  • Position: Undergraduate Research Assistant
  • Accomplishments: creating a presentation, dissecting drosophila melanogaster brain to weigh effect of alcohol on brain development
  • Research Description: Studied the lingering effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) on Drosophila Melanogaster’s neurological and physical development which include reduced viability, developmental delay, and reduced mature body size. When fruit flies are exposed to alcohol before they are born, it can significantly affect their adult behavior. This includes increased activity, becoming more resistant to the calming effects of alcohol, and having disturbed sleep and activity patterns. Additionally, I discovered that these issues are related to reduced levels of a substance called Drosophila insulin-like peptide (Dilp) and changes in the insulin receptor that plays a role in insulin signaling.
