Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is focused on creating and sustaining a healthy, safe, and positive learning environment for young musicians. Students are unable to learn and function in a classroom without trust in their teacher and peers, so I utilize group-based activities and focus on building relationships between the students and myself. My instruction features music from multiple different genres, cultures, and styles to encourage personal connection as well as seeking out new perspectives and culture. My lessons are often student-led and provide numerous opportunities for students to not only learn from me, but to help each other learn and prosper through personal choices. I allow students to often take on leadership roles to increase confidence, interest in material, and participation. I hold all students to high expectations, no matter how much experience or skill a student has, and encourage them to seek out more opportunities to make music outside of the classroom. Finally, flexibility is foundational to my lessons and I’m always adjusting the material for each class to ensure that the students’ specific needs are met, as well as maintaining appropriate participation.
