- Ensures that all assigned work within the plant is performed safely and reliably.
- Facilitates and coordinates Shift Safety meetings and Job Briefings for all personnel on the shift.
- Promotes and ensures a safe work environment, including the use of Human Performance tools.
- Mentors employees and provides training to support their development within the operations training progression plan.
- Responsible for Contractor Safety during their shift and conducts Contractor Safety Orientations as necessary.
- Fills in for Team Leaders in their absence.
- Maintains regulatory compliance, proactively avoiding reportable violations. If an incident occurs, coordinates with all relevant agencies as appropriate.
- Performs site safety and environmental audits and takes action to mitigate hazards.
- Makes real-time decisions and provides work direction for safe, efficient, and reliable operation of equipment.
- Performs startup and shutdown operations for boilers, turbines, generators, and associated equipment as required by the instructions from the SPO - Energy Management Organization.
- In the event of unplanned absences after hours, ensures adequate shift coverage by contacting other qualified personnel.
- Upon reaching this level, the employee should have completed all board operator qualifications and be serving as the designated lead control board operator.
- Operational duties include, but are not limited to, operating the control board, periodically making operational rounds, performing Preventive and Predictive Maintenance (PM/PDM) activities, managing boiler water chemistry, and monitoring and calibrating Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS).
- Leads the effort to develop and review operating procedures and rounds.
- Applies an understanding of plant systems, burner controls (where applicable), turbine controls, data acquisition, process controls, regulating devices, personal computers, troubleshooting, and more.
- Utilizes skills to perform inspections, calibrations, installations, repairs, diagnostics, testing, and troubleshooting of complex instrumentation equipment and regulating devices within a fossil fuel-fired power generation facility, both independently and as part of a team.

- Responsible for performing operational functions, which include continuous monitoring of equipment, operating valves, and understanding power plant systems. This also involves starting and stopping equipment, isolating and restoring equipment for maintenance following Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) procedures, and monitoring boiler water chemistry.
- Utilizes basic principles of mechanical measuring devices, instruments, controls, and regulating devices as used in generating plants.
- Troubleshoots, identifies, and repairs plant equipment, including performing preventative maintenance tasks.
- Applies knowledge and experience regarding the operation and function of steam boilers, turbo generators, pumps, heaters, steam traps, piping systems, as well as pressure and level regulators and their controls, along with auxiliary systems.
- Knowledgeable about and compliant with environmental rules and regulations; oversees environmental sampling duties.
- Serves as a Subject Matter Expert on water chemistry equipment, including analyzers, polishers, and reverse osmosis units.
- Familiar with and adheres to safety policies, practices, and procedures.
- Participates in the Monthly Safety Meetings and is open to involvement in the Safety Committee or the Awareness Team.
- Performs preventative maintenance activities that include simple electrical, instrument, and mechanical inspections and repairs.
- Interfaces and communicates with internal and external organizations/customers, such as dispatchers, directors, and contractors.
- During unit outages or other urgent situations, steps up to serve as Temporary Supervisor or Contract Administrator, responsible for overseeing other employees and/or contractors, which includes contractor management, quality control, cost management, and schedule management.
